Who is Alex Pribnow?

Born in Liverpool, England, in 1979 to a family of luthiers, I began life with a love for art, and would sit drawing silly faces for hours on end at the age of one. My fascination with myths, fables and fairy-stories began the day I first learned how to operate a book. My favourite of these would be Aesop's Androcles and the Lion, and Hans Christian Andersen's The Emperor's New Clothes, which ring so true! For me, painting mythology and fairytales isn't just a labour of love, but a way to keep them alive.

What do I try to achieve with my art?

Quite simply, for my audience to enjoy looking at it! When I work on art, no matter what the subject, I imagine I'm cooking a "visual feast" for the audience - something they can sink their eyes into. I also like to leave little 'trademarks' in my work, usually something small and maybe a little out of place as an in-joke for my fans to find...

I now live happily ever after in Tintagel, the birthplace of King Arthur, spending my days painting, illustrating and sculpting in my 'studio'. In 2008, I founded the "Malice in Underland Workshop" to design and create fairytale-only art and collectibles for fans of mythology and fantasy.

When I'm not busy plotting, painting or sculpting, I'm probably playing my piano, writing, or collecting unusual masks, insects, plush dolls and replica skulls.

Email Me

I receive many emails every day, so please bear with me if yours does not get an immediate reply. I will answer it, but it may be a few days before I'm able to. Please give your email a suitable title such as "enquiry" or "a question about..." if you are asking a question, or "important" or "URGENT" etc. on emails that require faster attention.

If you wish to send any physical correspondence, please contact me by e-mail first. There is no P.O. box address for the Malice in Underland Workshop as yet.

I studied illustration at Coventry University, meanwhile painting a number of early artworks, some of which found their way into various art and craft stores near where I was living. I was able to begin my career as an artist at home, painting and selling my fairytale art in my free time between studying and taking freelance jobs. Over the years I've produced covers, concepts and prop designs for books, websites, graphic novels, playing cards, LARP, board games, band albums and indy films.

More recently, I set up the Malice in Underland Workshop to make fantasy-only paintings, sculptures and novelty items for sale or commission, and provide venues with custom artwork. I continue to work on other live projects, particularly in illustration and sculpture, and frequently donate part of my income to charity.
